Humble citizens of Selly Oak,
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to another new season at Super Selly. Hopefully everyone has now recovered from our tour to Lithuania and have been putting in the hours in the gym (perhaps bar?) over the summer ready for the season ahead. After another league restructuring we will find ourselves up against some unfamiliar opponents this year, getting under way against Uttoxeter on the 9th September. However our Cup campaign starts against more familiar foes Old Halesonians on the 21st September. Playing or supporting, let's turn out in force and take both competitions by storm.
I am pleased to introduce as our new club Captain, Mr Mark Kelly (well nearly new - he tried last year until a jealous former captain, no doubt fearful for his own selection, decided to injure Capt Kelly for the season before a ball had even been kicked!). Better luck this year Mark and just stay clear of Mr Walster in training!
Despite the usual better offers from elsewhere, Derrick the Duck returns as head coaching guru and he and Mark are keen to improve our fitness levels and match skills. However as a concession to ensure that people do turn up to training, I understand they have reluctantly agreed to include some touch rugby! Des has also indicated that he may smile occasionally, complain less in the bar afterwards and generally be a bit less grumpy. I'm sure we are all looking forward to many eloquent and encouraging words of wisdom from this rugby oracle as the season progresses.
With more fresh blood on the committee this year (new people to blame when things go wrong!), there have been definite signs of enthusiasm creeping in during the summer months and hopefully this will continue throughout the season. The player recruitment drive to replace the old farts like myself is also going full steam ahead, with some good new prospects already turning up to pre-season training (I'm told!!!). We are however always looking for more. So if you haven't played in a while and fancy pulling on those boots one last time, or maybe you play regularly and are looking for a new club or perhaps just fancy giving rugby a go followed by a pint or two, then Selly Oak is for you.
Which brings me to the social side. The football crazy dwarf retains the role of social secretary. After rescuing the social calendar last season from the ruins of the Mr Ugly's efforts, Mr KV is intent on filling all vacant slots in his diary with evenings of pleasure for you and any hangers on who wish to come. For those new to the club, we at Selly have always prided ourselves on playing attractive committed rugby across the park, whilst enjoying ourselves during and after matches. In that vein we aim to win games on the pitch and win friends off it, lets remain true to these ideals in the months ahead. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our friends from the Referees Society, without whom there would be no matches at all.
Finally, remember, in rugby as in life, you get out what you put in (rule does not apply to exceptionally talented presidential type persons!). We have a great opportunity this year with all the hard work that has been done behind the scenes during the close season to take the club forward again. Let us all get involved and continue this effort both on and off the field in the months ahead.
It's your club.
Have a great season.
Kind regards,
President B.Lair.
P.S. I apologise for being too busy furthering my career as a world statesmen to write this myself but I have complete confidence in my committee of spin doctors who carefully worded the above on my behalf.
Shock Press Release
In a controversial ruling by the Selly Oak House of Representatives (the last bastion of integrity holding out against the global power hungry aspirations of the president), it has been decreed, much to the relief of Messrs Kelly and Hall, that there is a clear conflict of interest if the president is permitted involvement in the selection process. As such in order to avoid any possible temptation, President B.Lair from this moment forth is ineligible for 1stXV selection (except of course for crucial games where all idealistic selection policies go out the window).
